Why does your child need to practice word problems?
Word problems help kids learn and understand complex math concepts. The average word problem requires students to find the appropriate equation or operation, pick the amounts or quantities from the problem and solve the problem. This can be challenging for some but introducing your child to different types of word problems can be mentally stimulating for him.
Three Types of Word Problems
- Basic operations word problems: These can be solved with the help of basic math operations such as adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing, fractions, decimals or percents. They can be very helpful if you need to review your child’s fundamental skills. We have addition word problem worksheets, subtraction word problem worksheets, multiplication word problem worksheets and division word problem worksheets to practice this type of word problem.
- Math riddles and puzzles: A math riddle will usually be in the form of an ambiguous question that can be interpreted in two different ways. It also contains a clue that requires the student’s creativity and presence of mind to unlock the answer. These are problems that challenge your child’s ability to think out of the box and come up with innovative solutions. Check out our critical thinking worksheets for practice with these.
- Math stories: These are relatively complex variants of the standard word problem and usually provide a detailed background on the subject. The student needs to identify the key concepts and amounts contained within it and (sometimes) draw a picture of each sentence for a better understanding of the problem. Use fraction word problem worksheets, decimal word problem worksheets and algebra word problem worksheets for practice with this one.
