Teaching your Child the Alphabet
Most children are able to recognize a few letters by the time they are two or three. By the age of 4-5, most children can identify almost all the letters of the alphabet. This means, while you can begin teaching your child when he’s two or so, go easy on the tapes and flash cards. Instead, you could try using colorful visual material like picture books containing animals, colors, shapes and other eye-catching objects. Your child will really love pointing out the letters he recognizes and will try his best to learn new ones. It’s also a good idea to read him short and simple stories when he’s 2 or 3. This will help him understand that books contain print, which in turn is made up of letters. Fridge magnets and alphabet puzzles are other playful ways to get him acquainted with letters. Printable alphabet worksheets work well when he needs to practice writing his letters.
