Winter Celebrations across the World

Winter in America is celebrated with Christmas and New Year. But how does the rest of the world welcome the cold weather?

  • Hanukkah

    This is a Jewish holiday to honor the victory of the Maccabees (the rulers of Israel from 164 BCE to 63 BCE) over King Antiochus. Hanukkah is celebrated with songs, prayer, food and the lighting of candles.

    Highlight – Latkes (potato pancakes) served with sour cream and applesauce.

  • Chinese New Year

    This most important event in the traditional Chinese calendar falls between January 21 and February 20 each year. The Chinese New Year is celebrated with large dinners and visits to family and friends.

    Highlight – The color red is considered very auspicious and gold is supposed to bring wealth.

  • Eid al Adha

    The Muslim festival of sacrifice honors the Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to submit to God’s will by sacrificing his son. Eid al Adha is celebrated with the sacrifice of an animal and hosting a feast for family members, friends and sharing the meat with the poor.
