I once knew someone who was constantly being appreciated for the amazing magazine articles she wrote. While some complimented her research, others were in awe of her writing skills. In other words, she excelled at work. However, we could all see her struggle to keep her personal life intact. Sounds familiar? Most of us have, at any given point of time, been through something similar. Then there are those who are so engrossed in maintaining personal lives that they are left with no time for work. To the modern woman, striking the delicate balance between work and personal life may sometimes seem like the biggest mystery. Things need not be so dreary, especially if you live your life based on the following principles.

  1. Observe – Being mindful of your patterns can reveal to you the exact source(s) of your conflict. Is it that you are putting in long hours at work that has your family feeling neglected and unloved, causing tension at home? Or is it that you are letting your personal troubles come in the way of efficiently dealing with tasks at work? The first step towards problem solving is knowing where lies the concern. Once that is clear, you can be more conscious of the strife causing patterns and guard against them, making special efforts to ensure that you do not repeat the same mistakes.
  2. Time Management – We all like to think we are good at multi-tasking. We are almost convinced we can manage a range of different chores and pay equal attention to each. However, truth is, one always suffers for the sake of the other. Time management is a skill that we must pay more attention to. Organize and break down tasks into smaller ones. For example, do not leave all the cleaning up for the weekend. Do a little every day. That way, things will not build up and throw other important aspects of life off balance.
  3. Say NO – You have promised to take the kids out for dinner. But just as you are finishing work, your boss shows up and asks if you can possibly squeeze in one more task before you call it a day. You know the wrong answer now can jeopardize a lot of things. Do you take a chance and upset your boss or disappoint your kids? Remember that it is okay to say no when you have already promised someone else your time. Tell him politely but firmly that you have other engagements. In the same way, if you already have a meeting scheduled for a particular time, don’t make another promise for the same time with your family just to keep them happy. You will only be able to make it to either one, so do not make commitments that are bound to clash.
  4. Separate Work and Personal Life – When you are switching off your system at work, remember to switch off your work mode and leave it within the office. Likewise, when you step into work in the mornings, keep all your personal problems aside and concentrate on the tasks at hand. This helps you prioritize and concentrate, helping you be more efficient in all aspects of life.
  5. Take Care – Unless you are physically your fittest self and mentally sound, you will not be able to do justice to anything, be it personal or professional. Indulge in ‘me time’ every once in a while. Eat healthy, rest well, exercise, and do things that make you happy.

While some of the above tips may be easier said than done, it is important to make every effort to strike the right balance between work and family. After all, the two spheres will need to co-exist for a very long time.
