Celebrate Memorial Day – Fun Learning Activities for Kids
We observe Memorial Day every year on the last Monday of May, but do you know why?
This solemn occasion is meant to commemorate and honor all the men and women who gave up their lives in the military service of the United States. There are many stories about the origins of ‘Decoration Day’, but historical records suggest it started as an event to pay tribute to Union soldiers who died during the Civil War. Today, it is a federal holiday when the United States flag is flown at half-mast from dawn to noon.
Your child reads about the history and heritage of Memorial Day in textbooks. But does he really understand what it stands for? We have some great ideas to help your child actively participate in the observance of this special day.

Memorial Day Traditional Activities for Kids
These days, most of us have forgotten the significance of Memorial Day and choose to mark it (if at all) with movies and shop-a-thons. Traditionally, though, Memorial Day weekend was marked with activities such as laying the American flag on war veterans’ graves in national cemeteries; participating in local parades and community observances; and attending church services.
To educate your child about the true significance of the day, spare a moment and have the whole family observe the ‘Moment of Remembrance’ at 3 pm local time.
