10 Simple Tips When You are Moving Houses:

Here’s a quick checklist of all the steps you can take care of to ensure a hassle-free moving experience.

Start early –

Usually, you are aware well in advance about when you are going to move. Planning the move correctly is half the battle won and can save you a lot of pain and grief when it actually happens. As soon as you know you are going to move, pull out the calendar and plan accordingly. Do not wait until the last minute or week to pull everything together, only to be left with many headaches.

Pack your breakables separately –

The worst fear of using movers is not their price but losing your valuable breakables. The ‘handle with care’ label doesn’t always help. So, pack up a box or two with your most expensive and breakable items, and volunteer to move just those boxes yourself.

Label every box –

The golden rule of moving houses is to label each box with its destination and contents. Write which room you would like it in and a detailed list of its contents. This will help the movers to place your boxes in the right rooms, and you'll know exactly where to find everything.

Pack a suitcase for a short trip –

Pack a suitcase with your basic belongings to survive for a day or two, exactly like you do for a short trip. Even if you don’t unpack in your new home as soon as you reach, you can shower and get dressed without too much hassle.

Pack and prepare major appliances –

Supervise how they pack your major appliances. More often than not, the movers will do a shoddy job of it, so make sure you guide them along the way. Assign somebody to supervise them when they reach the destination so that they can directly keep the appliances in their designated places.

Involve children –

Moving can be very unsettling for young kids. Allow them to choose the color of their room or a piece of furniture that they would like to have in their room. Give each kid a box to decorate and have them pack their favorite toys in that box. That way when you are in your new home, amidst the sea of boxes, the children can easily find their box and associate themselves with some of their ‘old’ things.

Pack necessities separately –

Pack your necessities in a separate box. Don’t forget to include your toiletries, cleaning supplies, bottles of water, utensils, disposable plates, first aid kit, and the super essential tool kit!

Plan your furniture layout ahead of time –

This will help the movers set up the heavy furniture even before you reach the destination. You don’t have to rearrange anything after the movers have unpacked and can save yourself a lot of additional work and effort.

Make your bed –

The first thing you do when you reach your new home is to make your bed. This way, even if you haven’t completed unpacking and all you can see around you is a sea of boxes, at least you know you can hit the comforting bed when you want to call it a day.

Unpack one room at a time –

Avoid jumping from one room to another when you are just half way through with the last room. This way, whenever you need some break from the mess and pain, you can relax in one of the unpacked rooms over the boxes instead of finding space among the piles and heaps of things strewn around.

A final note…

No matter how organized you are, more often than not, you will find all the unnecessary things before you find what you are looking for. So, stay calm, plan, and enjoy the new abode!
