Fun Family Outing - County Fairs

Planning a fun outing for the entire family can be a challenge, especially if you have to find a single activity to appeal to people of varied ages and interests. The next time you find yourself in such a predicament, why not plan a trip to your local county fair? County fairs are in some areas, annual events that promise a great deal of fun in a variety of forms. With unique live performances, animal shows, exhibitions, contests, fun rides and great food, you can be sure to spend a great day there with your family. Every county fair is unique and represents the local culture and heritage, but here are some common features you can expect to find at any county fair.

Animals

Animals

A barnyard, petting zoo, or animal viewing area of sorts is an integral part of every county fair, and children love the chance to spend time with goats, sheep, chickens, rabbits, pigs and other animals. They can pet them, feed them and in some cases even participate in contests involving animals. How would your kids fare in Canyon County Fair’s ‘Hogs n Mud Contest’, where they have to chase a pig through an arena of mud, catch him and put him in a trough? Larger county fairs have animal shows like the seal show in the L.A. County Fair. Many county fairs also have a birthing exhibit, where visitors who arrive at the right time can watch a live birth in progress!

Live performances

Live performances

The stage performances held during county fairs are another great attraction. Depending on which fair you’re attending, you may be able to catch performances by magicians, hypnotists, knife throwers, trick ropers, torch throwers, jugglers, dance troupes and all other kinds of performers. The bigger fairs even attract talents who hold Guinness records and who have performed on shows like America’s Got Talent. Live music performances are also an integral part of every county fair.

Competitions

Competitions

County fairs give every person a chance to showcase their own talents. Competitions are held under every category imaginable, and you will find watermelon eating contests, landscape design challenges, beauty pageants, baby beauty pageants, dance competitions, rodeo events, cooking contests, food art competitions, races and more. Tractor pull and truck pull events are also immensely popular in county fairs.

Exhibits

Exhibits

Livestock and produce exhibits give every farmer and animal breeder a chance to show off their best results. County fairs often have a wide range of categories when it comes to livestock exhibits, including cattle, goats, rabbits, horses, sheep, pigs and ponies. There are also categories for exhibits like photography, hobby crafts, ceramics, quilting and more.

Food

Food

County fair food is unabashedly unhealthy, and often vendors take pride in coming up with new concoctions for the fair. You can expect to find unique creations like the chocolate covered corn dog found in the Orange County Fair, deep fried Kool-Aid from the San Diego County Fair, red velvet funnel cake from the Florida State Fair, chocolate covered jalapeno poppers from the Minnesota State Fair and fried ice cream burger once again from the Florida State Fair. Sure, it’s unhealthy, but you won’t get a chance to taste these creations anywhere else, so fair goers often give in to their impulses in this annual event.

Rides

Rides

Carnival-like rides complete the entertainment options at county fairs. Don’t expect anything too fancy, but you can be sure to find a few good rides to elicit screams and add to the festive atmosphere of the fair.

As you can see, county fairs hold something for everyone in the family. Many of the larger fairs have official websites where you can find schedules of each day’s events. Fairs also have special days like senior day and family fun day with special rates and events organised accordingly. So regardless of what you have planned for the summer , make sure to include a trip to the county fair by the end of it.
