Blue whales are the giants of the living world; in fact, they are the biggest living creatures ever to have inhabited the earth. Blue whales are mostly found in the Southern Hemisphere but there are a few in the North Pacific Ocean and the North Atlantic. Blue whales have come scarily close to extinction because of whaling – hunting whales for their meat and oil – but they are now listed as a protected species.
