Fun with Buttons
How about sprinkling learning with some colorful fun? This is a tweaked geoboard activity for preschool kids that will teach them all about shapes, patterns and symmetries. The cardboard will provide a strong surface for the preschool activity while the buttons will serve as reference points for the pattern recognition activity. After creating shapes with threads and yarns, encourage kids to make alphabets and symmetrical patterns to further reinstate their learning.
You will need:
- Cardboard
- Colorful buttons
- Strong glue
- Strings or yarn
- Scissors
Directions:
- Glue the buttons across the length of the cardboard, along its ridges so that the columns are straight. Carry on until there are at least five columns of buttons.
- Cut different sized strings and yarn and tie knots with them on random buttons, keeping the other ends loose.
- Encourage them to make their favorite shapes and symmetric patterns with the string and yarn.
- You’ll be surprised to see kids making innovative patterns and new shapes with this preschool activity.
